Cherries: European Commission approves a new PGI

The European Commission has approved the request from the “cherry of the coteaux du Ventoux” to be in the European register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

The “cherry of the coteaux du Ventoux” is a French red cherry which grows in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, from the Comtat Venaissin plain in the west to the Luberon massif in the south. The climate of the Vaucluse department is particularly favorable for the production of this traditional and secular cherry crop. The fruit is hand-picked exclusively by experienced workers. The reputation of the “cherry of the coteaux du Ventoux” comes from its large size, as well as its availability on the market from early May until mid-July. Many cherry markets have emerged, which attests to the economic importance of the crop. This new designation will join the 1,761 other food products already protected.
