At Royal Berry, the strawberry season has begun. Since the beginning of March, the grower from the Dutch province of Gelderland started picking their Malling Centenary, and last week the Elsanta was ready for picking as well.
Traditionally, Malling Centenary is an early growing variety. At the moment, the growers of the variety are at the peak of production. “The quality, taste, and shelf life are truly perfect”, says Jan van Genderen. The volume of Elsanta is also increasing.

As is the demand, which is also seeing an incline at the moment. However, the prices are still relatively low. “Spain has a substantial presence on the market, which makes it difficult for us this spring.”

Conquering the market
Due to their shelf life, Dutch strawberries are suitable for shipping to all destinations. For Royal Berry, these mainly consist of German and Dutch retail at the moment. “The demand is increasing as it is beginning to get increasingly sunny, which is a good thing. As soon as people have gotten a taste of our strawberries, we will conquer the market since this year they are again delicious.”

Cold
As of mid-May, the Favori and Furore varieties from the Mini-Air outdoor greenhouses will also become available. Because of the recent cold weather, some precautions were needed for this. “From Sunday to Monday night, we watered the roof constantly to counter frost so it could do no damage to the crops. Luckily everything is growing along nicely, so we can turn it into a great season.”
