Turkey increased fresh fruit exports via air freight during pandemic

Turkish Cargo's reduced prices during the pandemic crisis allowed exporters to increase exports via air freight. In the three month-period (from March to May), Turkey exported 1,753,000 USD (1.55 million Euro) worth of fresh fruits.

According to Aegean Exporters’ Association’s figures, from March until the end of May, Turkey exported 2,811,000 USD (2.49 million Euro) worth of fresh fruits and vegetables via air freight. Fresh spring fruits such as plums, cherries, strawberries, apricots and peaches correspond to 62% of this export.

In this period, Turkey exported 224 tons of cherries via air freight in return of 1,096,519 USD (0.97 million Euro), 154 tons of apricots in return of 383,027 USD (339,510 Euro), 23 tons of plums in return of 122,937 USD (108,970 Euro), 33 tons of strawberries in return of 95,136 USD (84,330 Euro) and 14 tons of peaches in return of 55,536 USD (49,230 Euro).

The Aegean Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Association’s vice-president Cengiz Balik pointed out to the reduced prices of Turkish Cargo and expressed his content about the company’s support both for producers and exporters.

Balik said that in the beginning of the season, the transportation cost per kilo to the Far East was 2.7 USD (2.39 Euro) and to closer destinations it was 1.2 to 1.5 USD (1.06 to 1.33 Euro) and that now the prices are reduced to 1.7 USD (1.51 Euro) and 1 USD (0.89 Euro) respectively.

Exporter Ali Ucak pointed out that air freight is the easiest mode of transportation during the pandemic and said: “Reduced prices in air freight allowed us to export more. It is especially advantageous in our exports to the Far East. The products that we package here can be in the Far Eastern shelves within two days. The prices were reduced by 30%, if these are reduced by 50%, we could further increase our exports.”
