Due to bad weather conditions, India has had a shortage of onions this year. India tries to overcome this problem by importing onions from different countries and Turkey is one of them. Turkish producers exported 50.000 tons of onions to India over the past 1.5 months and they are now preparing for new orders.
"Our producers work hard to meet demands"
Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK)'s Turkey-India Business Council Vice-President, Tevfik Donmez, said that India is a country where opportunities arise very quickly. India has a population of 1,5 billion and Donmez stated that even a minor shortage in agricultural production may create serious problems. This year, India'a onion production halved due to bad weather conditions, said Donmez.
Recently in Turkey, there is an increased demand for onions and potatoes. Therefore, the production increased. "Last year, onion and potato prices skyrocketed in Turkey and farmers planted more of these products this year. Therefore, we have enough in stock." said Donmez.
"We've exported onions to India for the past 45 days. Usually we transport them via our Mersin and Izmit ports. Our producers work hard to meet the demands. Some of the exports are made through private companies and some through state institutions." Donmez explained.
Due to increased demands, onion export prices increased, said Donmez and continued: "Onion prices per ton increased from 150 USD to 250 USD. Following last year's problems in Turkey, this has created an opportunity for our producers."
"We export onions in a planned way, so that we don't have a shortage in our country" said Donmez.
