The rains and frosts that were registered in spring in the Bierzo region have affected 75% of the cherry harvest, initially estimated at one million kilos. The technical director of the quality fruit brands of Bierzo, Pablo Linares, has described the campaign as "disastrous."
This is the third year in a row with "bad" harvests for the cherries of Bierzo. This has prevented the use of the quality mark, since "only 10% of the total volume harvested is eligible for it," said Linares.
From a technical point of view, the meteorological instability caused by climate change is having a notable impact in Bierzo. Cherries are probably the most affected fruit in the region so far because of their cycle, since "it is the first fruit to arrive and is also the most affected by that changing spring weather," said Pablo Linares.
Despite this, and although in these cases everything depends on the weather, the technical director of the Bierzo fruit quality brands claims that the producers are committed to continue working in the relaunch of one of Bierzo's most outstanding agricultural products.
