This year's very bountiful domestic potato harvest led to a very extensive supply on the wholesale markets. Demand was not always able to keep pace. As in previous weeks, according to the German BLE, traders were forced to reduce their previous demands on several occasions. In Munich, domestic Berber offered in small containers was comparatively expensive. Imports from neighboring countries continued to play only a supplementary role and were sold without difficulty.
© BLESchleswig-Holstein:
In Schleswig-Holstein, this year's potato harvest was so good that some producers cannot sell their potatoes. The Gut Wulksfelde near Hamburg is also facing this problem. They have launched a potato rescue campaign at short notice. A total of 160 tons of Bioland potatoes are to be donated to the Hamburger Tafel food bank.
The wholesale potato business remains difficult. High yields and expanded acreage are resulting in a record harvest. This cannot be marketed in its entirety through farm sales or direct sales. Wholesalers are unable to absorb the remaining quantities in their entirety. The retailers are still hoping for brisk business during Advent. The reduced prices have stimulated sales somewhat. Special offers are creating momentum. The catering industry and commercial kitchens in particular are showing increased demand. However, the supply pressure will continue for now. Price pressure is also coming from the difficult sales situation for industrial potatoes across the region. Storage surcharges are lower than in previous years. Much of the produce is going to feed troughs and biogas plants, as storage is not profitable.
Lower Saxony:
The first frosts and cool days have boosted potato sales a little, reports the BVNON.
Rhineland-Palatinate:
The potato market remains largely unchanged. Goods from temporary and intermediate storage continue to flood the market at low prices. The quality of these goods is limited, and so high-quality stored goods with surcharges are increasingly finding their way onto the shelves. After a quiet November, market participants expect demand to pick up during the holiday season.
North Rhine-Westphalia:
Demand for table potatoes is described as normal to good. The usual stockpiling activities for the main harvest were well received by consumers. On the industrial potato market, prices in Western Europe are mixed.
Hesse:
In the state of Hesse, potato prices remained roughly the same as in the previous week.
