Ukrainian onion prices fall 68 percent year on year

Onion prices in Ukraine continue to decrease rapidly, with domestic wholesale levels now at 3 to 8 hryvnias per kilogram (US$0.08 to 0.21), averaging 22 per cent lower than at the end of last week. Year on year, prices have fallen by 68 per cent compared to early December 2024.

Finway reports that reduced demand and an oversupplied market are the main drivers, alongside a higher share of medium and low-quality onions. Prolonged rains during the harvest period affected crop quality across the country, leaving a considerable portion unsuitable for long-term storage. As a result, growers are offloading perishable lots quickly and continue to lower wholesale prices, while keeping higher-quality onions in storage in expectation of potential price improvement.

According to the report, "The price of onions continues to gradually decrease due to a noticeable weakening of demand for this product, while the supply in the market remains excessive."

By the end of December 2025, Ukrainian retail chains will show uniformly low consumer prices for onions. Novus lists onions at 6.49 hryvnias per kilogram (US$0.17), Varus offers bulk onions at 6.5 hryvnias per kilogram (US$0.17), and ATB prices them at 6.49 hryvnias per kilogram (US$0.17). Producers continue to adjust to the market while consumers benefit from the lowest price levels seen this season.
