The Tasmanian fruit industry is mourning the death of Carl Hansen. Carl was a third-generation orchardist who dedicated nearly seven decades to apple growing.
"It's with great sadness that the Hansen family and our Hansen Orchards team announce the peaceful passing of Carl Hansen on 31 October 2025, aged 86.
"A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, colleague, and friend, Carl has been a constant in the lives of so many who will deeply miss his kind and gentle nature, insightful guidance, and humble stewardship. After 69 apple crops, our patriarch, master of his craft, hangs up his boots and knocks off for a well-earned rest.
"Rest in Peace, our great "Captain Carl", here's to a life well lived, and a legacy that'll live on."

Hansen leaves behind a legacy that began when his grandfather planted the family's first orchard in 1887. Having worked through 69 harvests, Hansen remained active in the family business, which now produces both apples and cherries across the Huon and Derwent valleys.
Hansen was recognised for his hands-on approach and long-term commitment to the fruit industry. Earlier this year, he received Fruit Growers Tasmania's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Tasmanian horticulture.

"Carl was one of the loveliest gentlemen in the industry and a wonderful role model and mentor to so many Tasmanian growers," said Scott Price, a long-time colleague and fruit industry representative. "Whether you were a large grower or a small one, Carl always gave you his full attention, made you feel heard, and was generous with his time. A proud supporter of his family, he was progressive, innovative, and an inspiration."
Hansen's influence extended beyond his own orchards. His guidance and willingness to share knowledge made him a respected figure among growers across Tasmania.
