Australia marks banana day with free gym access

For National Banana Day (October 8), Australians can again access a free workout by using a banana as a gym pass. The initiative, first launched in 2024, has returned with more than double the number of gyms taking part across the country.

Consumers can present a banana purchased from supermarkets or greengrocers at one of more than 900 participating gyms, ranging from boutique studios to large chains. The initiative is aimed at combining fruit consumption with physical activity.

Australian Bananas has also worked with fitness coach and television presenter Tim Robards to highlight the connection between nutrition and activity. Robards said: "Health and fitness have always been a huge part of my life - from my early days as a chiropractor, through to my work in fitness, TV and wellness, to now balancing training with being a dad. Bananas have always been one of my go-to snacks. They're natural, easy to grab, and full of the energy you need for a great workout, to chase after the kids, or just keep on top of a busy day. National Banana Day is a great reminder that looking after your body and keeping it fuelled doesn't have to be complicated."

Grower Miki Buchanan also noted the link between banana production and the initiative's role in promoting the fruit: "As a banana grower, it's fantastic to see Aussies turning our fruit into both their ticket to the gym and their go-to workout snack this National Banana Day. The Banana Gym Pass is all about helping people stay active and fuelled, and we're proud that bananas, packed with the nutrients your body needs, can power workouts right across the country."

The Banana Gym Pass is being used to raise awareness around the fruit's nutritional value and encourage broader consumer engagement during National Banana Day.
