Around 100 tons of onions have entered Bangladesh from India through the Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj in an effort to ease domestic market prices.
According to port officials, the consignment arrived on Thursday evening, transported on four trucks. This marks the first time onions have been imported via the Sonamasjid port since India imposed a ban on onion exports eight months ago.
On August 12, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin announced that the government would permit onion imports from India and other sources at competitive rates to stabilize supplies and prices.
Currently, each importer is allowed a maximum permit of 50 tons per shipment. Traders, however, have called for additional permits to expand volumes and further stabilize domestic market conditions.
