"We need to move about 20 percent more goods to maintain revenue"

For many products, current prices are particularly low compared to last year. This applies to both open field and greenhouse vegetables, according to Jürgen Meinert, a vegetable grower and wholesaler based in Nuremberg. "We have been in the cucumber harvest for about four weeks now, and the prices for our long cucumbers are 30 percent below last year's level. However, the prices for the mini cucumbers we also offer from our own production are fine and almost at the level of last year."

In addition to salad cucumbers, Meinert is currently also harvesting the last stocks of leeks.

As a regionally operating vegetable dealer, Meinert supplies the Bavarian area with his own fleet of vehicles. His customers mainly include weekly markets, supermarkets, retailers, and the gastronomy sector. A part of his product range comes from his own cultivation. "Across the board, producer prices are currently too low. This ultimately means that we have to move much more goods, approximately 20 percent more, to maintain sales."

Due to the cold, the mood in the wholesale market is currently rather subdued, Meinert continues. "But spring-like weather is forecast for next week, and we are expecting higher demand from the gastronomy sector and weekly markets."
