Açaí from Codajás gets geographical indication

The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) has granted the 122nd Geographical Indication to Açaí de Codajás, marking it as a product of the Codajás region in Amazonas. This designation, categorized under Indication of Origin (IP), acknowledges the region's reputation for açaí production and extraction. The achievement comes after a collaborative effort spanning four years between Sebrae and other entities, aiming to secure official recognition for the area's açaí, often referred to by locals as "black gold."

This distinction is significant for Codajás, which led in açaí production across Amazonas from 2018 to 2021, contributing over R$ 31 million to the local economy. In Codajás, 70% of the population is engaged in açaí-related activities, with around 600 producers directly involved in its cultivation and sale. The Geographical Indication status not only celebrates the unique quality of Codajás açaí but also highlights the economic importance of açaí production for the region.
