Plum growers report a drastic reduction in fruit-setting in Shimla, India

In Shimla district's Kotgarh region, plum growers have reported a drastic reduction in fruit-setting, attributing it to approximately 15% of the normal rate. The local plum association suggests that dust from the ongoing SJVN's Luhri hydroelectric power project at Neerath and several stone-crushers could be impeding the pollination process by settling in pollen tubes. This situation is significantly impacting the average plum production in the state, with the Kotgarh area experiencing a severe decrease to about 15% of expected yields.

Given the economic reliance of several municipalities on plum cultivation, there is growing concern among farmers about the long-term implications of reduced fruit quality and yield. Efforts are underway to engage with the Pollution Control Board and the University of Horticulture and Forestry for a comprehensive study on the impact of dust. The aim is to ascertain the extent of the problem and potentially secure compensation for affected farmers if a direct correlation is established.
