In Lao Cai Province's Muong Khuong District, the pineapple season has seen significant advancements, with harvesting commencing two weeks ago. The district, particularly the Ban Lau commune, stands as a pivotal area for pineapple cultivation within the province, contributing over 90 percent to the district's cultivation area. This year, Ban Lau has dedicated 1,700 hectares to pineapple farming, aiming for a total yield of approximately 20,000 tons.
Local farmers have reported a substantial increase in pineapple prices, marking the highest rates in two decades. Direct sales to traders are fetching between VND6,500 and VND7,000 per kilogram for average-quality fruit, and up to VND8,000 for premium quality. This is a significant rise from last year's break-even prices of VND4,000 to VND5,000 per kilogram and considerably higher than the VND3,000 to VND3,300 offered by processing plants for first-grade pineapples.
According to a plantation owner, the ease of selling at these high prices is unprecedented. "The pineapple prices this year are the highest in the past 20 years, and selling has never been easier," he commented.
