Bergamot oranges: good harvest expectations, but phytosanitary challenges

In the Emater/RS-Ascar administrative region of Caxias do Sul, optimism prevails among bergamot producers amidst the current harvest season. The Economic Information report from Emater/RS-Ascar, disseminated by the SDR, highlights a stable condition in orchards despite the challenges posed by leafminer larvae and mite infestations. To mitigate these issues, producers are implementing ground cover management strategies through mowing and fertilization alongside the development phase of the fruits. Additionally, a regimen of preventive phytosanitary treatments, employing copper, sulfur, and fungicides in rotation, is in place to curb pest and disease proliferation.

Although the Montenegrin fruit yield is anticipated to be lower, it is not expected to significantly affect overall production. Market prices for the fruit are observed to fluctuate between R$0.55/kg at the farm level and R$0.70/kg upon delivery to processing entities. Nonetheless, a satisfactory harvest is projected, with price variations contingent upon regional and varietal factors.
