In a recent operation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted several trucks on the Ajilete/Idiroko road in Ogun State, loaded with agricultural produce destined for export. The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, seized 880 bags of white beans, 584 bags of onions, and 18 bags of dry pepper. Compt. Hussein Ejibunu, Customs Area Controller for FOU, Zone A, during a press briefing in Lagos, highlighted the redirection of these trucks to Nigerian markets instead of seizing the goods, allowing for their sale within Nigeria.
The NCS's anti-smuggling efforts in February 2024 led to 93 seizures, including 3,779 bags of foreign rice, a locally made gun, cartridges, Indian hemp, rubber slippers, used motorcycles, premium motor spirit (PMS), and used tyres, amounting to a duty-paid value of N751.1 million. Additionally, the operation prevented the smuggling of eleven exotic vehicles and recovered N78.16 million in underpaid customs duties, reinforcing the NCS's commitment to safeguarding the national economy and public health ahead of the Easter celebrations.
