Pakistan bans export of bananas and onions to stabilize prices

In a decisive move to control the rising costs of essential commodities during Ramadan, Pakistan's government has enacted a ban on the export of bananas and onions. Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Chief Secretary Punjab, underscored the critical nature of the situation through a communication, urging for a total ban on the export of these vital food items. As a result, exports of bananas to Afghanistan and Iran have been halted, along with restrictions placed on onion exports to Gulf nations.

This policy is designed to stabilize the domestic market and protect consumers from price spikes. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a significant increase in the weekly inflation figures, with bananas and onions experiencing price hikes of 5.25% and 2.87% respectively, highlighting the urgency of these export limitations.
