Emptier cucumber pipeline ready for Sonora production to begin

Production on cucumbers from the northern Mexican region of Sonora will start in about 10 days. "The crop is starting at its normal time, and we've got a nice, healthy crop coming in," says Raquel Espinoza of Produce House, adding that the volume looks to be similar to last year's. Production will continue out of this region until about mid-June.

This region is coming on at a time when cucumber supplies have been on the lighter side, including from regions such as Sinaloa, Mexico. "The market is extremely active because there's a shortage of cucumbers currently. There are some days where the market is coming off a little bit, but then it picks up again. So the current market is high in the double-digit range," says Espinoza, adding that the product that is coming out of Sinaloa is a good quality cucumber.

Why a shortage?
Part of the reason for the shorter supply could have to do with demands from the Mexican government this season to reduce cucumber acreage due to the lack of water available, says Espinoza. Another reason is likely impacts from weather events such as Hurricane Norma, which went through the area in October. "Between having less supply and then having weather issues as well, it all makes for a shortage," she says.

As for the markets, Espinoza says it may take a while for pricing to reach a reasonable value similar to what's been seen in previous seasons, given the cucumber pipeline is relatively dry.
