Malaysian durian market sees early season due to weather

In Malaysia, the recent weather conditions have led to an early and abundant durian harvest, significantly affecting market prices and availability. Torrence Chua of Top Durian Station in Jurong West is offering Musang King durians at $10 per kilogram, a decision spurred by an unexpected bumper crop in Johor Bahru. Despite the attractive pricing, Chua notes a slow uptake from customers, attributing it to a lack of awareness about the early season. Durians, he remarks, are perishing on the trees, prompting the promotion.

Alvin Teoh, proprietor of Durian 36 in Geylang, observes a similar trend, with Johor Bahru and Pahang farms experiencing a surge in durian yield. To entice customers, Musang King and Red Shrimp varieties are now sold per piece at a 30% discount, although he mentions a quiet business period post-Chinese New Year, with expectations of increased activity during the traditional peak season from June to August.

Conversely, the owner of Ah Seng Durian highlights the current scarcity in supply and suggests that it is premature to predict further price reductions, emphasizing that the true durian season has yet to commence.
