After a solid start, the demand for oranges from Greece has calmed down a bit, says George Balakanakis of Greek fruit exporter Balakanakis: "The first part of the Greek orange season has turned out very good for us. However, current demand is a bit slower compared to the start of the season. For us, our main markets for these oranges can be found in European countries, but as stated, demand isn't as high as it could be at this point of the season."
Next to the lower demand at this moment, Balakanakis states that overall production for the oranges was down this season. "Looking at the production for Greek oranges, the yield has been lower this year than it was in the year before. On op of that, there is fierce competition from other origins, which will not help the current demand level improve. Consumption of consumers also seems a bit down and competition is expected to only increase from this point on. We do have faith in our product, as we feel the eating quality of the Greek oranges is very strong."
Despite the slowdown of trade at the moment, Balakanakis does hope they'll be able to continue with their rotations of oranges: "The current situation is slightly challenging, but we do have our hopes of being able to finish the orange season in a successful manner. It's our expectations that we'll continue having a nice rotation for our products," he concludes.
