"We've just come through a period of high tomato volumes across all varieties," shares Ellen van Kester of Horticola Guadalfeo, based in Motril, Spain. "Now, the varieties are gradually getting back under control, particularly the specialties like Marazul, Cherokee, Rose tomatoes, Kumato, Coeur de Boeuff, Raf, and San Marzano."
"The market for cherry and cherry plum tomatoes remains a complicated one. The market involves large quantities available and quite some players from other countries, so it doesn't only depend on Spain. The high volumes were mainly due to a later planting date and high temperatures," explains Ellen.
She also shares some good news, once again Horticola Guadalfeo's tomatoes are recognized as Premium by taste Institute Sabor del año. "This recognition applies again to the Marazul and Cherokee, and this year also to 'Rosa de la Reina.'"
