Garlic supply surge in India's Vashi market impacts prices

For the first time in three months, the Vashi wholesale Onion-Potato market, situated within the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) precincts, has observed a notable increase in garlic supply, leading to a decrease in its buying price.

Despite the increased availability, traders suggest that retailers might not see immediate price relief. The market witnessed an influx of around 225 tons of garlic, with a significant supply spike recorded on Thursday, surpassing 200 tons, according to an APMC administrative official.

This surge in supply has adjusted the average buying price to Rs 145 per kg, down from a peak of Rs 210 per kg. The official highlighted the stark contrast to January's scenario when garlic stocks dwindled, noting a sevenfold increase in arrivals compared to January 22, when only 31.4 tons reached the market. Retail garlic prices had soared to Rs 480 per kg in February, but the recent arrival of new crops has revitalized the market, attracting traders back, as noted by Ashok Walunj, Director of the Onion-Potato market at APMC Vashi.
