In response to the unsustainable water usage in Spain, Coop is diversifying its fruit and vegetable imports by forging ties with Albanian producers. The Swiss retailer's head, Philipp Wyss, revealed plans to finalize contracts with Albania in the spring, aiming to enhance its assortment with Albanian tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, strawberries, and mandarins. This move comes as Coop already sources peppers and watermelons from Albania, indicating a shift towards the Mediterranean nation's agricultural offerings.
Albania's climate, akin to Spain's, supports the cultivation of similar produce despite its smaller land area and production capacity. The country, however, faces its own set of challenges, including inefficient farming practices and distribution hurdles, as highlighted in a World Bank report. Yet, with over a third of its population employed in agriculture, which accounts for nearly 20% of its GDP, Albania's sector holds untapped potential for growth.
