Shipping delays cause shortage of potatoes, onions, garlic and more in Samoa

In Samoa, Ah Liki Wholesale, a prominent food importer, has publicly apologized on Facebook for a "temporary shortage" of essential items such as frozen chicken, sugar, potatoes, onions, and garlic. The scarcity, the company explains, stems from "delays occurring across all shipping lines" and "mechanical complications" disrupting transport routes. "Unfortunately, much of this is out of our control," Ah Liki Wholesale admitted, while also noting efforts with shipping partners to resolve the issues promptly.

The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to the Samoan community, promising updates as soon as more information becomes available. They optimistically anticipate resolving the shortages by month's end, barring further complications. Concurrently, the Samoa Observer highlights a month-long chicken supply gap, leading to price surges and absence of price controls. Fast food prices have risen, with chicken now retailing at SAT10.30 per kilo, up from $5.90 prior to the shortage.
