Rebecca Garcia with Cabefruit

“Mangosteen is the most popular exotic fruit item for us”

Exotics continue to see steady demand, but there is one variety that witnesses a higher increase in demand than others, which is mangosteen. "This product has become one of our most requested and valued products," says Rebecca Garcia with Cabefruit. "We are pioneers of Mexico-grown mangosteen and as early adopters, we've been able to supply our customers with steady volumes," she said. In addition to mangosteen, the company also offers jackfruit, rambutan, Thai banana, banana flower, green mango, and starfruit. These different exotic varieties are grown in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Nayarit, as well as in Guatemala.

While many fresh produce commodities have been impacted by lower supply due to weather events, production of exotics has been steady. "The weather has not affected the supply of our exotics this year, except for green mangoes," said Garcia. "This program usually starts around November for us, but this season, we didn't start until January, about three months later than usual."

Overall, since the start of the year, demand for Cabefruit's exotics has been steady. "There are just a few suppliers importing exotics into the US, resulting in a continuous demand." The company's exotic items are offered both in bulk and bagged, depending on the request from the customer. "We work with both retailers and wholesalers. Retailers usually ask for bagged and stickered products whereas wholesalers prefer bulk presentations."

Company name change
Cabefruit was formerly named Origin Fresh but changed its name recently. "The reason behind the name change and our company entering a new produce era originated from the idea of combining Mr. Cesar Cabello's 40 years of experience with his distinguished company Cabello with the fresh and innovative ideas of the new Cabello generation from Origin Fresh Produce," shared Garcia. "As a company, we are truly excited for the change and the new legacy, especially since our distribution capacity will be improved and have a wider reach. We will be able to offer our customers with many more products."
