Red dragon fruit shipments from Vietnam to Canada are growing

The supply of red dragon fruit from Vietnam to Canada is ample right now. "We're coming into the peak season of it and the quality is outstanding right now," says Brian Boccia of TSI Tropicals, noting that quality is better than last year at this time. While the product is being shipped from Vietnam year-round, peak supply will last another three months.

While the overall supply is similar to last year, the improved quality is attributed to better weather conditions in the growing season.

As for demand, it's strong for the fruit, particularly now during the Lunar New Year holiday season, an event that began February 10th. (2024 also happens to be the Year of the Dragon.) "We're seeing a lot of sales happening this month and we brought a good amount in in the past few weeks for the celebration. Our supplier, Golden Bee, ships them via air into Toronto," says Boccia.

Color preferences
After handling the fruit for four years now, Boccia believes demand for the item gets stronger every year. "We just find that this red dragon fruit variety is a little bit sweeter than the white and there are repeat sales on red over white. It has a great flavor and a vibrant color--it's almost purple," he says, adding that to help grow demand for the product, TSI Tropicals is also looking into sustainable packing options.

As for pricing, it's similar to last year and tends to stay steady.
