In an impressive display of agricultural prowess, Bahia state has reported a significant uptick in fruit exports during January to November 2023. The export volume reached an astounding 170,000 tons, translating to revenues of R$1.05 billion, marking a 37% increase from the previous year.
Mango and grape productions led the charge, complemented by a rise in shipments of other fruits like pineapple, apricot, fig, guava, papaya, watermelon, lemon, and lime, as per Agrostat/Mapa. This success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of both state and federal governments, along with sector representatives, in penetrating new markets, thereby diversifying export destinations and enhancing overall export volumes.
Guilherme Coelho, president of Abrafrutas, credited the sector's favorable pricing in 2023 as a significant growth catalyst, particularly for Northeast producers. On the ground, challenges persist, as noted by mango producer Anderson Ferreira from Maniçoba, who discussed the hurdles in logistics and the vital role of soil richness in cultivation. Similarly, Luiz Soares, a grape producer from Juazeiro, emphasized the conducive commercialization environment for table grapes in 2023, underlining the importance of investments in new varieties and the necessity for improved logistics for international market penetration. This export boom not only bolsters Bahia's economy but also cements Brazil's status as a key player in the global fresh fruit market.
