In Tien Giang, a Mekong Delta province, premium Monthong durian prices have surged by 20% to VND200,000 per kilogram due to a significant drop in the supply of grade A fruits. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, a local durian trader, highlighted the scarcity, noting, "Due to a scarcity in the off-season we can only procure one or two tons a day."
This scarcity has led to a peak in prices, mirroring highs from a year prior. The limited availability has traders like Hanh from Cai Lay District struggling to source enough durians, despite being willing to pay premium prices. A VnExpress survey found that while grade A Monthong is fetching prices between VND190,000-202,000, grade B is slightly lower at VND175,000. Conversely, grade A Ri 6 durian prices have decreased by 14% compared to last year, now ranging between VND120,000-126,000.
As the Mekong Delta's durian farmers gear up for the new season, the off-season supply of Monthong is nearly exhausted, explains Dang Manh Khuong, another trader. The comparatively higher supply of Ri 6 durians has made them more affordable. However, with increasing demand in both domestic and export markets, prices for Ri 6 are expected to rise, according to a representative from Van Hoa, an agricultural goods exporter.
