"Italian Abate Fetel pear shortage offers space for South African pears"

OV Fruit should receive its first shipment of South African Williams Bon Chrétien pears tomorrow. "The season started slightly early, but due to port delays, they're only arriving this week," says Victor van Turenhout. This season, the Dutch importer boasts a comprehensive pear range from South Africa, featuring varieties like Sempre, Rosemarie, Vermont Beauty, Forelle, Cape Rose, Cheeky, Beurre Bosc, Abate Fetel, and Packham's (CA).

Market conditions for South African pears are good. "The Williams Bon Chrétien pears' good flavor always makes them a hit. However, this year's harvest is slightly smaller. The market outlook is also very promising for the Abate Fetel pears, which we should get next week."

"Italy's harvest is significantly down, with reports of a 50% reduction. That offers plenty of opportunities for our overseas pears. Italian pears would usually compete in the market, but they're scarcely available now. The South African pears did, though, suffer some wind damage," Victor explains.

"The first batch of Abate Fetel pears is being offered at around €1.90/kg. We distribute South African pears to clients across Europe, from the United Kingdom to Greece. Primarily to wholesalers, but there's also an increasing demand from supermarkets."

"In the coming months, we'll have a nice selection of both loose and packaged pears. Last year, we sold overseas pears until nearly September, thanks to the strong market. We'll have to wait and see if we can repeat that this season, but the prospects look promising," Victor concludes.
