At the Novorossiysk port in Russia, authorities have uncovered the presence of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Wied.) in shipments of oranges, that arrived from Egypt. This discovery occurred during the quarantine phytosanitary control conducted by specialists from the Southern Interregional Administration of the Federal Service Rosselkhoznadzor on February 5th and 8th.
The Mediterranean fruit fly was found alive in eight shipments of oranges originating from Egypt, totalling a weight of 189.6 tons.
The identification of this quarantine pest was confirmed by assessments of the quarantine phytosanitary condition of the sub-quarantine products by the Southern Branch of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "All-Russian Plant Quarantine Center" on February 5th, 7th, and 8th.
As a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of quarantine organisms within the country, the importation of the affected shipments has been prohibited.
