Vietnamese fruit and vegetable farmers and exporters celebrated a record-breaking 2023

In 2023, Vietnamese vegetable and fruit farmers and exporters celebrated a record-breaking year with an export turnover of $5.7 billion. The year 2024 promises even more prosperity with the opening of new high-end markets.

As the year commenced, 10 tons of Vietnamese macadamia, also known as the 'queen of nuts', were shipped from Dak Lak province to South Korea. This new market access, following the opening of the Japanese market, provides significant opportunities for Vietnamese macadamia growers to expand their reach.

Simultaneously, Cao Phong district in collaboration with the Hoa Binh provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, saw the first export consignment of Cao Phong oranges to the UK. This export opportunity was made possible after rigorous testing confirmed the oranges met the European standards for plant protection chemicals.

Furthermore, the first consignment of green-skin mangoes from An Giang was shipped to Australia and the US. These recent market openings have been the result of concerted efforts by ministries and branches to increase farmers' incomes and boost exports.

In 2023, the export turnover for vegetables and fruits increased sharply by 69.2 percent from 2022, marking the highest growth rate among Vietnam’s farm produce. This success was largely attributed to the durian export boom following the signing of an official export protocol with China.

Looking forward, Vietnam has set an ambitious goal to export $6-7 billion worth of vegetables and fruits in 2024. This target is deemed achievable due to the successful opening of new markets and the imminent signing of a protocol for exporting coconuts and frozen durian to China.
