Ricardo Mendes, Trust Green Trading:

"A few years ago, you rarely found papayas in Dutch supermarkets"

Last summer, Carlos Henrique Ferreira and Ricardo Mendes started Trust Green Trading. Ricardo says this fledgling Dutch company has a distinctive product in flown-in exotics. For 2024, Trust Green’s plans and goals are to expand the business establishing some solid business partnerships which will enable more market presence adding to the assortment more regularly, with direct importing of limes, mangoes, grapes, ginger, etc.

Papayas by air (tree ripe fruit) are their mainstay. "As already expected, the sales started quite quietly in January, but we managed to maintain the weekly flow. “We expect that the Brazilian product which is already well known and consolidated in some markets due to the quality, taste, presentation, etc, can leverage of the Spanish product to become more and more popular in certain markets. A stable supplying from European production, especially papaya Formosa, in Tenerife (Spain) is having a considerable positive impact.

"Mainly due to the lower logistics costs, our local production is helping to spread the popularity of papaya Formosa in some markets, where such products were not very popular before. You can't call papayas commodities yet, but a few years ago, you rarely found them in Dutch supermarkets. That's changing. We see the mango business as an example, where almost two decades ago, we used to consume hard stone fruit, cheaper product compared to the by air (tree ripe), this opened the doors for “ready to eat” fruit, available all year around through the ripening facilities in Europe, which enable a change in consumer’s taste and desire for a better product”.

"The main advantage is that the overall demand for exotics keeps growing from retailers, wholesalers, and the processing industry. We sell throughout Europe, including Germany, Austria, France, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands
