Shallot prices in Tamil Nadu hit a historic low

Shallot prices in Tamil Nadu have plummeted to a historic low of Rs 20 per kg, a significant drop from Rs 80 the previous week. Farmers are calling for the government to set a fair minimum support price and provide adequate storage facilities. Shallots are widely grown in Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Tiruchy, with the crop proving profitable over the past several months. The crop, which can be harvested in 60-70 days, has attracted more farmers due to its previously stable market rate.

However, following a bumper harvest, the price dropped dramatically in both wholesale and retail markets. Farmers argue that the current price does not cover their costs, which amount to Rs 75,000 per acre. Despite a yield of 8,000 kgs per acre, the low price has led to unforeseen losses. "We have been demanding proper storage facility, as shallots could be stored when the prices dip," said one farmer from Thuraiyur.

Conversely, garlic prices have surged to Rs 450 per kg from Rs 350 the previous week. Traders attribute this to rain-affected production in The Nilgiris, Kodaikanal, Dindigul and Erode, and a poor harvest in Uttar Pradesh that has reduced imports.
