Brackish water contributes to the intense flavor of tomatoes

Soilless cultivation helps prevent all those soil-borne pathogens that can affect yields. That is why Vincenzo Di Natale, administrator of Poggio del Cardo - a company with a long-standing tradition in growing tomatoes -together with his father Silvio, opted to have crops that combine the Sicilian tradition and technological innovation.

The family-run business is located between Pachino and Portopalo in south-eastern Sicily. It grows its exclusive tomato varieties under the "Sapìto - Il Gusto del Pomodoro" brand. The assortment mainly features beefstock, plum and cherry tomatoes. "Because specializing is the only way to be highly competitive. We aim at achieving good flavor, shape and a long shelf life because these are the characteristics required by our commercial partners," explains Di Natale.

"A few essential elements help us in what we do, first of all irrigation with brackish water, which generates a well-calibrated stress that helps intensify flavor. Then there is soilless cultivation, which helps avoid soil-borne diseases. Finally, we employ useful insects for natural pollination, thanks to which we manage to be more sustainable."

"Our greenhouses are so-called cold as they do not need to be heated nor do they need artificial light to achieve ideal growth condition, which translates into a very low carbon footprint. All these elements are much appreciated by operators who base their policies on health and sustainability."

The company grows the produce on five hectares and ships to the main markets in northern Italy including Milan, Turin, Bologna, Fondi and much more. In addition, thanks to a specialized partner, a consistent share is exported to Switzerland and Great Britain. The company holds the GlobalGAP, GRASP and Nickel Free certifications. The latter constitutes an added value as it meets the needs of those (around 5% of the world population) suffer from allergies.

"Future challenges include an extension of the volumes send abroad. That is why we are studying a targeted communication campaign which also includes taking part in Fruit Logistica 2024 in Hall 4.2 / C-40. It will be an occasion to meet operators and illustrate our production and our commitment."
