The supply of blackberries coming from Mexico looks like it will be steady for the coming weeks of February. “We are very excited about our Erandy and Erandira varieties that offer a superior eating experience compared to the traditional varieties out of Mexico,” says Sarah Quackenbush, Sales Manager for North Bay Produce, a coop made up of 30 grower-owners from North, Central and South America.
The coop is shipping the Erandy (right) and Erandira varieties of blackberries.
The majority of the cooperative’s blackberry production right now is coming from the Michoacán and Jalisco areas of Mexico.
The Erandy and Erandira proprietary varieties are part of North Bay’s RESERVE™ premium label that was introduced in the latter half of 2022. It's part of the co-op’s varietal development initiative in the berry category. The brand, which also includes varieties in other berries such as SEKOYA/LIVIE blueberries, is intended to highlight select fruits and help them stand out on shelves.
Quackenbush says North Bay is working to put blackberry promotions in place for the next few weeks.
Looking ahead on demand
Demand has been good for blackberries. “We are working to put promotions in place for the next few weeks,” says Quackenbush. “We also expect demand for blackberries to continue to grow this season and over the coming seasons as a result of the improved eating experience with the new varieties.”
