Miguel Gonzalez was one of the first in the Netherlands to import Spanish strawberries:

"As Valentine's Day approaches, people start thinking about strawberries"

The Spanish strawberry season is in full swing at MG Fruit in the Netherlands. "Strawberries have been one of our range's staple products since we started. I'm a pioneer in the country and, in the 1980s, was one of the first to import these summer jewels from Huelva," says Miguel Gonzalez.

The Spanish strawberry season begins in late December and runs until early May. "Strawberries are a beautiful fruit, requiring dedication and passion to satisfy customers. The flavor is paramount, but how strawberries look also delights people during these dark days."

According to Miguel, significant progress has been made in the Huelva production area in recent years with the introduction of new varieties. These are aimed at not only the grower yields but also good flavor, appearance, and shelf life. "To avoid risk, MG Fruit imports from all cultivation areas in Huelva," he says.

"We carry a complete strawberry assortment ranging from Calinda strawberries in 12x400 gram packaging for the most demanding clients to 8x250 gram and 16x250 gram flow packs, 10x500 gram punnets, and 1 kg laid. Especially for Valentine's Day, we also have 12x340 grams heart-shaped packs."

"The market is good; people always think of strawberries as Valentine's approaches. The only issue is the farmers' protests, which makes it challenging to get through France and Belgium. That's causing delays. I don't mind strikes per se; it's a right, but destroying fresh Spanish products, to me, is just criminal," Miguel concludes.
