Adapting to lower volumes key for Peruvian mango exporters for 2024 season

Peruvian mango producers and exporters are adapting their strategies to be able to supply mangoes to markets. According to Jorge Aranguri Bazan from the exporter Dominus, “Due to the challenges posed by a 90% reduction in this year's mango production, we are adapting our strategies to ensure the continued supply of high-quality mangoes to our clients.”

He says they are currently exporting a diverse range of mango varieties. “Kent is the main variety, well known for its distinct flavour and quality. We are vertically integrated to a certain degree, and our own farm (Margarita) has been one of the most productive of the region in this very tough season. While the quantity may be affected, our commitment to delivering excellence remains unwavering.”

Europe main market
“Our main market has traditionally been Europe, where our mangoes have gained recognition for their exceptional taste and quality. In Europe, prices have clearly increased above previous years, mainly as a consequence of the fact that, so far, Peru has shipped about 80% less fruit to the continent than last year. Berlin, being a hub for the global fresh produce industry, provides us with an excellent platform to engage with potential partners and buyers from various regions,” states Aranguri.

Expanding in Asia
“We are continually exploring opportunities in Asia to expand our market reach and diversify our customer base. In this region, we are trying to diversify our markets with mangoes both by sea and by air. Demand for mangoes in Asia is growing, especially in South Korea where we have developed an important relationship with key customers and supply them with high quality mangoes by sea and by air at this time of the year, which is where mango consumption grows due to their festivities. We trust that the quality and investment we have put into our mangoes will make the difference and continue elevating Peruvian mangoes from other origins,” emphasises Aranguri.

Dominus is an agribusiness company with operations throughout Peru, present in an area of over 1,500 km. The company has a big focus on being more energy efficient and for their operations to be lighter on the environment says Aranguri.

“We specialize in the harvest, process and export of high-quality mangoes. Since 2019, we are part of the Danper Group, one of the leading 100% Peruvian agribusiness conglomerates with companies in three different continents. Dominus has a rich history of delivering premium mangoes to international markets. We are constantly reducing our environmental impact by using renewable energy. Almost 75% of our energy comes from natural gas which is cleaner and more efficient. Also, we are using solar panels and our refrigerated gases are ecological; this way we are using innovation as a powerful tool to become environmentally sustainable and take pride in being one of the pioneers in the north of Peru in doing so. We will be able to supply our clients until ETD week 13,” explains Aranguri.
