Guava from local production to export

Carlópolis, situated in the pioneer north of Paraná, stands as the largest producer of table guava in the state. Annually yielding approximately 38 thousand tons of fruit, guava production constitutes a substantial 25% of the municipality's GDP.

The economic significance of guava cultivation within the local community of Carlópolis, Brazil is unmistakable. Operated predominantly by family farmers, who maintain an average of 400 to 500 plants per hectare, guava production in Carlópolis ensures a steady income stream throughout the year. Notably, the practice of pruning has yielded positive outcomes, enabling a consistent distribution of production.

A pivotal achievement in this trajectory was securing Geographical Indication (GI) status for Carlópolis guava. This esteemed certification acknowledges the distinct characteristics of the local production, positioning it as a benchmark for quality. This milestone was made attainable through strategic collaboration with Sebrae and registration with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

However, the pursuit of excellence did not conclude there. Local producers, in tandem with supportive entities, embarked on obtaining Global GAP certification. This accreditation not only underscores the quality of the guava but also unlocks avenues for exportation, presenting a valuable alternative amidst fluctuations in the Brazilian domestic market.

The rigorous Global GAP certification process necessitated a steadfast commitment to integrated pest management and the prudent utilization of authorized products. Moreover, producers were required to adhere to grace periods to ensure the absence of chemical residues in the fruits.

In practical terms, these certifications not only affirm the caliber of Carlópolis' products on the global stage but also engender significant economic advantages for the local populace. Guava production serves as a vital source of livelihood for small-scale farmers while positioning the city as an exemplar of commendable agricultural practices and international certifications.
