Onions, plantains, and sweet potatoes experienced highest price increases within a year

According to Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), onions, plantains, and sweet potatoes experienced the highest price increases within a year.

In the latest selected food prices report released last week by the NBS, these food items demonstrated significant price hikes in December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

The average price of 1kg of onion bulbs surged by 122.9 percent, reaching N971.9 in December 2023 from N435.9 in December 2022.

Similarly, the price of 1kg of unripe plantains increased by 114.6 percent to N746 from N347.7, while the price of ripe plantains grew by 101.5 percent to N758 from N376.2.

Sweet potatoes also saw a notable increase, with the price of 1kg rising by 105 percent, and Irish potatoes climbed by 85.8 percent compared to their prices in December 2022.

Additionally, other food items that significantly impacted Nigerians' expenses include yam tubers (1kg), which increased by 92.5 percent to N818.9 from N425.5.
