Misamis Oriental, Philippines

Lagonglong Port Project lauded as timely move to boost food production

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. has praised the construction of Lagonglong Port in Misamis Oriental, Philippines, as a significant step in the government's mission to enhance food production. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Secretary Tiu Laurel stated that the port would support the Department of Agriculture's efforts to escalate agricultural production, ensure affordable food accessibility, and achieve food security.

Scheduled for completion by March 2025, the Lagonglong Port project, a private commercial port development by Amadi MGT Terminals Inc., is set to augment trade capacity in Mindanao, bolster logistical prowess in the region, and create new employment opportunities. The first phase will provide an annual throughput capacity of 3.3 million metric tons of bulk cargo. The port will also feature storage facilities and modern equipment to handle both international and domestic cargo, including perishable goods.

Secretary Tiu Laurel believes the port's completion will lead to a reduction in feed costs and fertilizer prices. It will also improve the efficiency of transporting essential goods and provide storage facilities to preserve the quality of agricultural products and raw materials.

Upon completion, the Lagonglong Port is expected to stimulate the development of factories, processing plants, and other value-adding facilities, as seen in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and other Western Pacific regions where ports have been constructed.
