Namibian grapes make their way to major UK supermarkets

Namibian grapes, particularly from Aussenkehr, have found their way into leading UK supermarkets, including M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Tesco, and Morrisons.

Gary Vaughan-Smith, Chief Investment Officer at SilverStreet Capital LLP, a major table grape producer in southern Namibia, had previously announced the completion of the table grape harvest on their Namibian farms. A team of 900 people managed to pack 2.4 million cartons over a span of eight weeks. The onset of spring has led to the formation of a fresh canopy of leaves on the Namibian table grape farms.

For the 2023/2024 season, Namibia’s grape production is projected to be approximately 9.1 million 4.5-kg cartons. In related news, an early season experiment by South African logistics operator GoGlobal and shipping line MSC to ship Namibian and South African grapes through the port of Walvis Bay in Namibia has been deemed successful.

About 70 containers were loaded at the port, with the UK and Europe being their next destination. “MCS has agreed to include Walvis Bay in their schedule to replace Cape Town,” said Delena Engelbrecht, CEO of GoGlobal.
