Will the turmoil in Ecuador have an impact on its trade relations with Peru?

The critical situation of violence in which Ecuador is immersed raises questions about how this conflict will affect trade relations with Peru, considering that Ecuador is Peru's third most relevant trading partner in South America.

According to Edgar Vásquez, director of the Research Center of Economy and Global Business of the Association of Exporters (CIEN-ADEX), in the short term, this situation will have no immediate impact on Peruvian companies' shipments to Ecuador. However, Vasquez stressed that the situation could generate logistical problems if it affected the communication routes and the transport of goods.

The Association of Exporters (Adex) has expressed its concern about the situation in Ecuador and has urged the Peruvian government to protect the border to guarantee tranquility in the northern region of the country. Likewise, the Foreign Trade Society of Peru (ComexPerú) has asked the Government to mobilize the armed forces to the border to prevent similar situations of violence in Peru.

in 2023, Peruvian exports to Ecuador amounted to nearly 1.079 billion dollars, while imports from Ecuador totaled approximately 1.034 billion dollars. Although Peru maintains a positive balance in its exports, the figures indicate a 9.7% decrease in Peruvian exports and a 10% increase in imports from Ecuador over the previous year.

These data highlight the economic interdependence between the two countries. Amid concerns about border security and the potential impact on trade relations, it will be crucial to monitor the evolution of the conflict in Ecuador and how Peruvian authorities respond to protect economic stability in the region.
