The USDA has released a report, offering a preliminary agricultural update post-earthquake on the current situation that devasted the Noto Peninsula in the central prefecture of Ishikawa, and Toyama Prefecture on New Year’s Day.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake triggered multiple aftershocks and tsunami alerts, leaving more than 30,000 residents in evacuation shelters. FAS Japan will provide updates as the situation and recovery efforts continue.

On January 1, 2024, at 16:10 (Japan standard time), a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, devastating towns and villages located in the prefectures along the Noto Peninsula and adjacent coastline on the Japan seaside. Niigata is also another prefecture that was impacted, although to a lesser degree. More than 500 aftershocks have hit the affected area in the past three days.
