Is a cucumber really the secret to fixing a noisy door hinge?

There's a popular tip on the internet that rubbing a cucumber slice on a noisy door hinge can silence it. This noise is usually due to dust or lack of lubrication. The theory suggests that cucumber juice lubricates the hinge, but cucumbers are largely water and don't offer lasting lubrication.

While cucumber oil, which is moisturizing, comes from the seeds, it's not present in the flesh or skin. For squeaky hinges, silicone spray or cleaning and lubricating with WD-40 or lithium grease are more effective solutions. Petroleum jelly is a non-chemical alternative, but its effectiveness varies. Cucumbers are not a reliable solution for this issue.
