As the dragon fruit season concludes, production is plummeting by over 50%. Many merchants in Chau Thanh district of southern Long An Province are buying type 1 (highest quality) to 3 red-fleshed dragon fruits for VND33,000-43,000 (US$1.32-1.72) per kilogram. Still, most farmers have massively reduced production after suffering lasting losses.
In the period after the pandemic, dragon fruit exports fell off a cliff, leading to persistent losses for numerous farmers. Some orchards could not afford fertilizers and insecticides, switching to different crops.
According to Nguyen Quoc Trinh, chairman of the Long An Dragon Fruit Association, the fruit’s prices are at their highest since the start of the year. Nonetheless, the harvest has yielded less than 200-300 tons.
