Bolivia will strengthen its pineapple for export production with the MD2 variety

Bolivia's Ministry of Rural Development and Land aims to strengthen the country's pineapple production with the MD2 variety, which is in high demand in the international market. It will do so through its Improvement of the Production of Pineapple for Export and the National Market Intervention Program, which involves three institutions (INIAF, SENASAG, and FONADIN).

As part of the program's innovation area, the National Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Innovation (INIAF) acquired 350,000 pineapple offspring of the MD2 variety (also known as the Golden or Dorada variety) from Costa Rica for Bs 2,099,000. This variety will be multiplied and subsequently delivered to pineapple producers.

According to the general director of INIAF, Juan Callahuara, producers currently produce pineapples of the Pucallpa variety for the national market. The introduction of this new variety, he added, is intended to boost exports.

Juan Lamas, president of the pineapple producers of the Tropic of Cochabamba, highlighted that the acquisition of this pineapple variety will strengthen production and improve the economy of the producing families.
