More Maryland students will have access to fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day through a $4.7mln federal grant program. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is distributing funds to 213 elementary schools statewide from the US Department of Agriculture's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), up from 196 participating schools during the 2022-23 academic year.

Chedraui USA's Q3 sales impacted by changing FX rates
Chedraui USA, the parent company of Smart & Final, El Super, and Fiesta Mart, saw same-store sales edge up for its fiscal 2023 third quarter while net sales fell due to changing foreign exchange (FX) rates. Mexican retailer Grupo Comercial Chedraui S.A.B. de C.V, Chedraui USA's parent, said that US retail sales for the quarter ended September 30 dropped 12.5% to 34.19bln Mexican pesos (U.S.$1.88bln) from 39.08bln MXN ($2.15bln) a year earlier.

US: CommuniCare+OLE awarded first USDA produce prescription grant in Capitol Region
CommuniCare+OLE (formerly CommuniCare Health Centers) announced that its patients in Yolo County with diabetes are getting locally-grown fruits and vegetables as a key part of their diabetes care as part of a produce prescription grant from the US Department of Agriculture - the first to be awarded in the 6-county Capitol Region. Partnerships with the Davis Farmers Market, the Center for Land-Based Learning's Mobile Farmers Market, and Spork Food Hub enable patients to access an average of $70 worth of produce each month for 6 months.

Debt-ridden retailer Casino cuts 2023 profit outlook for France
Debt-burdened retailer Casino slashed its 2023 earnings outlook for France, saying investments required to fund price cuts to boost customer traffic and volumes in its supermarkets and hypermarkets would weigh on profits. Casino said in a trading update for France that it now expected full-year EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation) after lease payments to be 100mln euros ($105.4mln) instead of the 214mln forecast in July.

The study is part of a food affordability project at Warrnambool Base Hospital's South West Healthcare: Healthy Communities. Project coordinator Caitlyn Hoggan says the cost of living is overwhelmingly the perceived barrier to a healthy diet for the average Australian family. Ms Hoggan says the guidelines are "nothing groundbreaking" but are just "back to the basics" when it comes to healthy eating. "It's the good old fruit and vegetables; five servings of vegetables, two servings of fruit a day," she says.
