Colombian banana giant expands activities with the cultivation of Hass avocados

Banacol, heir to Chiquita Brands in Urabá, Colombia, and the country's second-largest banana exporter behind Uniban, has focused in recent years on creating independent companies under the GreenLand umbrella.

Among them, Wakate, dedicated to the production and marketing of Hass avocado in the department of Caldas, between the municipalities of Aranzazu and Neira, stands out.

Wakate has a projection of 2,050 productive hectares, 1,070 of which were already productive in 2021. Its Hass avocado nursery has a production capacity of 600,000 trees and has an apiary of 4,000 hives with about 40,000 bees.

However, since Wakate began its operation at the end of 2018, there have been environmental conflicts between the surrounding communities due to the opening of roads in protected forest areas and contamination of a spring that provides water to around 950 families in 16 villages.
