Sainsbury's launch sustainable gold kiwi linerless pack

Alongside established fresh fruit supplier Chingford Fruit Ltd, Sainsbury’s have launched the latest version of the sustainable “Pro-Produce Pack” for their premium “Taste the Difference” Gold Kiwi. The solution incorporates a die-cut lid offering increased product show-through and ventilation.

Since its initial launch in 2020, the plastic-free Linerless pack concept for Fresh Produce packaging has been well received by consumers. Online reviews have been particularly positive, with customers commenting with satisfaction at the opportunity to recycle the pack at home by the kerbside. Feedback also confirmed the packs success in protecting fruit during transit.

Sainsbury’s & Chingford Fruit were enthusiastic at the opportunity to offer the sustainable solution to customers, with the new benefit of extra visibility of particular appeal.

In addition, the proven packing efficiencies and success on shelf already within the market made the pack a reliable, practical choice as a sustainable product option. The new Gold Kiwi packs are now available to purchase in Sainsburys stores.

Rob Williams, director at Chingford Fruit commented on the new line now in stores. “This launch has been well received by Sainsburys and its’ customers. Part of the success of the project was the collaboration between all the key stakeholders. Not only this, but the clear vision of creating a format that would be befitting of the Sainsbury’s "Taste the Difference” brand was key.”

Graham Bonus and Andy Clark of ProPrint Group demonstrated the latest die-cut pack version at Fruit Logistica in February 2023. Feedback from the industry was positive about the updated lid visibility, which now enables producers to showcase, as well as protect the product.

ProPrint Group supply the new die-cut lids in the same easily stored reel format. The Ravenwood Packaging Nobac 5000L applicator can then apply these at highly efficient speeds. Producers and growers in Berlin gave lots of positive feedback for the new tray and lid combination at the exhibition. A new recyclable packaging opportunity with added product show through, the sustainable pack is suitable for a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, with a variety of tested tray configurations.
