PGI grapes from Mazzarrone

"Demand is so high that there is no need to stock grapes"

The second phase of the PGI grapes from Mazzarrone campaign, which mainly revolves around the Italia variety, is excellent. Thanks to favorable weather, bunches are uniform with particularly aromatic grapes boasting the typical muscat aftertaste. The Brix level is very high at between 20 and 23 degrees.

Gianni Raniolo

"Such a high sugar content is rare and it's the reason why consumers are appreciating this year's Italia variety a lot. We are in fact registering an increase in sales volumes of around 30%. Production prices have also increased by 20-30%, which is very rewarding for our producers after years of crisis. They have now found the motivation to invest in the improvement of their vineyards," explained the president of the PGI grapes from Mazzarrone consortium Gianni Raniolo.

"Again thanks to the favorable climate, we have not registered losses so far and we have actually made up for those caused by the rain in spring. Early grapes was in fact affected by issues such as downy mildew and oidium. Thanks to the improved situation, producers did not have to use pesticides or could only use very little, meaning the produce is close to zero residue."

"Considering how things are going now, the campaign will probably end early - we are thinking early or mid November. Demand is so high that the produce does not need to be stocked and, after the quality checks and preparation for transport, it is commercialized directly."

"The Red Globe season is also going well, with the produce boasting perfect color and interesting Brix levels. This year's productions manage to meet both domestic and European market demand however, for the first time in a long time, we have no availability for extra-EU markets. So far we have had no problems with the competition."

"The next challenge for the Mazzarrone territory is the experimentation with new late seedless varieties that can extend the campaign. The consortium will attend Fruit Attraction in Madrid this year too."
